About Bryan
I am:
an astronomer & educator at UC Berkeley’s Space Science Laboratory. I develop public programs; create educational resources; conduct professional development for educators; and teach astronomy & physics.
a proto filmmaker. I’ve been taking workshops and working with independent filmmakers as an editor, science consultant, associate producer, assistant editor, production assistant, grip, script supervisor, and production photographer. I’ve also been writing and analyzing scripts in the San Francisco-based Scary Cow writers’ group.
a sci-fi and fantasy fan with a particular love for Star Wars and Star Trek. I collect the films, soundtracks, books and comics, models and actions figures. I’ve written about the science in Star Wars and experimented with editing the films, TV shows, and trailers.
a saxophonist. I studied, performed, and taught music in college and grad school. Since 2002, I’ve played with the Jazz School’s Adult Big Band.
a bicultural American, of Mexican & European heritage, and father to neurodiverse twins. Increasing access to science for under-represented people has been a theme of my work. My most recent projects have focused on highlighting role models.
Some of my most memorable experiences include:
the birth of my twins;
being on the science team for a NASA space science mission called WISE;
shooting independent short films on location at Lick Observatory;
Showing "Navajo Skies" planetarium shows at the National Museum of the American Indian & the National Air and Space Museum, for which I wrote scripts, recorded & edited narration, and consulted on visuals;
participating in a Maya ceremony on the day of solar zenith crossing at Chichen Itza;
playing saxophone in a back-up band for The Temptations;
